entry doors with transoms

Many unique components make up the structure of entry door design. In fact, entry doors involve more sophistication and nuance than you might think! Let's learn all the ways front doors can be customized for truly unforgettable curb appeal.

Let's start with the door

Head and sill

First, you have the head, also known as the head jam. This is the uppermost section of the door or window. The sill, which makes up the very bottom of the frame, is essentially sealed and attached to the door itself. Doors on the exterior of a building will always have sills, as opposed to interior doorways which do not.

Rails and stiles

The thin, parallel segments of entry doors are known as rails. These will be located at the top, bottom, and sometimes middle sections of the door. Stiles, on the other hand, are the vertical pieces on each side of a door panel. There are two of these - the lock stile and the hinge stile.

Door panels (slabs)

Door panels (i.e., slabs) are the parts of a door that swing forward and back. A complete panel may be divided up into smaller subsections. There are also panel profiles, which are utilized to fill in the gaps where a floor and doorframe meet.

Handles

Next, you have the handle. This is the knob or lever you grab to open and close the panel. While several types of handles exist, entry handles specifically work with a key cylinder on the exterior portion and a push/turn lockset on the interior.

Decorative additions

It is important to consider what decorative features you would like for your entry door design, as this is an opportunity to upgrade the initial impression of your home. For example, you can make decisions about "sticking," a decorative element placed between the rails and the inner panel. There are multiple profiles to choose from, including the quarter-round, square, and ovolo designs.

You also have the option to include dentil shelves. These are essentially small shelves that are placed along the exterior of an entry door. Dentil shelves are an excellent way to boost curb appeal, instantly adding flair to any entry door design.

You may additionally choose to add doorlites, panes of glass framed inside the door. Decorative glass makes for a striking impression. Depending on your preference, you can order the glass in clear, colored, or opaque styles for added flair.

Going for a truly eye-catching impression? Door knockers come in all shapes and sizes, from simple geometric shapes to animals to letters. This is an excellent way to boost curb appeal and show off your unique style at the same time.

Beyond the door slab

The good news is that custom entry doors have limitless potential for a stunning design. If you desire a unique façade, a transom window or sidelight could be just the addition you're looking for.

What is a transom window?

Transom windows are usually quite narrow and sit above the main frame of the entry door. While many are not fully functional, they offer a completely distinctive personality to any entryway. Multiple styles exist for the customization of transom windows. For instance, one common design choice is a semicircular window with prominent dividers. Rectangular shapes are also very popular.

The type of window material is another aspect to think about for entry door design. Clear, textured, and frosted panes are just a few examples.

What are sidelights?

Perhaps you would like to allow more light into your home? Entry door sidelights are vertical panes of glass on either side of your door. If you prefer the maximum amount of light possible, consider the full-light sidelight. If you'd like a little extra filtration, craftsman light models would better suit your needs.

The material you choose adds an extra lift of curb appeal to your residence, so spend some time selecting the option that best matches your entry door.
